Shaping the Future of Emergency Medical Services

June 1, 2008

BC Ambulance Service is helping influence the future direction of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Canada, by pilot testing the first ever EMS standards created for nation-wide application. The first of five EMS agencies invited by Accreditation Canada to participate in the pilot, the initiative was an excellent opportunity for BCAS employees to provide feedback on operations and shape how Canadian EMS organizations are accredited in the future.

First endorsed in 2006 through the EMS Chiefs of Canada White Paper, a strategy document calling for the development of a Canadian system of accreditation that recognizes and promotes excellence in EMS, the information collected through this research will help advance the provision of EMS in Canada and improve the quality of care offered to patients. Input gathered from BCAS employees will also be used to develop a quality roadmap for the Service, the purpose of which is to provide BCAS with a clear picture of its strengths and to highlight areas the Service may wish to focus on in relation to the developing standards.
