The BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) has a vested interest in the welfare of our patients in all aspects of their lives, including their financial well-being. Recently, the BCAS Finance Department has implemented a series of initiatives to help ensure that in addition to the best emergency medical care, patients also have access to their ambulance invoice in a timely manner.
Thanks to the commitment and diligence of the Ambulance Billing team, significant progress has been made in reducing the BCAS billing lag to an impressive 2-3 months.
This billing lag reduction can be attributed in part to the new fee structure implemented in October 2007, which in addition to introducing a fairer, more streamlined approach to ambulance fees, also significantly simplified the BCAS billing processes. Specifically, the new structure eliminated approximately 72,000 patient transfer fees and 68,000 bills for MSP Premium Assistance recipients, which made it much easier for Ambulance Billing staff to quickly and accurately assign billing eligibility and issue invoices.
In addition to the simplification of billing, efforts have also been directed at addressing system flow issues, by introducing a process to sort similar bill types within the Ambulance Billing Department. Thanks to this system, the processing capabilities of the department have increased dramatically, which has lead to a record level of production and a significant increase in throughput.
