BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) Superintendent Grant Brilz and District Supervisor Rick Atkinson presented three lifeguards at Victoria's Crystal Pool with Vital Link Awards in recognition of the life saving CPR they performed on an unconscious pool patron.
On March 2, lifeguards Abbey Joschko, Sara Gilmer and Tanille Johnston were on shift at the Crystal Pool in Victoria when Joschko noticed a patron face down in the water. She immediately blew her whistle for assistance, dove into the water and pulled the person to the pool side, where the lifeguards determined the individual wasn't breathing and had no pulse. Gilmer initiated Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) until Joschko and Johnston could take over. Gilmer, having just recertified her Automated Electronic Defribulator (AED) ticket two days earlier, ran and got the AED machine and the team continued CPR until BCAS paramedics arrived.
