RICHMOND - The BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) presented 11 year old Alexander and his 8 year old brother William with Good Samaritan Awards, in recognition of their quick-thinking actions which saved their diabetic mother's life. The awards were presented at the boy's school, St Joseph the Worker in Richmond, during a school assembly.
On July 2, 2008, 8 year old William noticed that his mother was acting strangely and asked if she had tested her blood sugar. When she didn't respond he alerted his older brother Alex. As Alex is also a type 1 diabetic, he knew he had to test his mom's blood sugar and while conducting the test instructed his brother to call 9-1-1. After making his mother comfortable, Alex took the phone and explained to the BCAS dispatcher that his mother was diabetic and relayed the results of her blood sugar test. The boys remained on the phone with the dispatcher who was able to call the boy's father and connect them through a conference call.
"The bravery of these young boys is highly commendable," said Clarke McGuire, BCAS Unit Chief. "I believe their knowledge of their mother's situation and the quick actions they took in calling 9-1-1 saved their mother's life that day."
