GOLDEN - On August 6, 2008, Janine Dendy wasn't due to give birth for another month and thought she was having false labour when her and fiancé Walter Hayton got a big surprise. Dendy's labour progressed quickly and by the time Hayton called 911, the baby's head was already visible.
BC Ambulance Service Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Nickie LaSaga answered the call and realized that the baby was in distress when she was told that the chord was wrapped around the baby's neck. While the ambulance was being dispatched, LaSaga provided instructions to Hayton on how to deliver the baby safely.
LaSaga was recognized with a Stork award for her role in this positive patient outcome.
