6 Year Old Receives Recognition for Heroism

June 25, 2008

On December 18, 2007, Carrie MacKinnon, a Type One diabetic and nurse, woke up with low blood sugar. When she asked her 6 year old son Erick, who grew up knowing about his mom's diabetes and the signs, for two juice boxes Erick knew his mom was in trouble and called 9-1-1.

He explained clearly to the BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) Emergency Medical Dispatcher that his mother was a diabetic and needed help. When Carrie woke up in her living room with an IV in her arm and BCAS paramedics looking after her, Erick was sitting calmly on the couch watching cartoons. His actions were recognized at a special ceremony at his elementary school assembly in Ladysmith.
