The BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) presented a Central Fort George Traditional School Grade 3 student with a Good Samaritan Award to recognize his quick actions in calling 9-1-1 for his sick grandmother.
"Without the quick thinking of this young man, his grandmother may not be alive today," said BCAS Northern Region Executive Director Mike Michalko. "By recognizing she was not well, calling 9-1-1 immediately and working with BCAS emergency medical dispatchers, his grandmother was able to receive the help she desperately needed."
Mary Suvee had been suffering with pneumonia for a few days. On January 11, 2009, her grandson Tyrone noticed that she was acting strangely and wasn't making very much sense when she spoke. He notified a family friend who told him to call 9-1-1 right away. Tyrone spoke with the BCAS dispatcher and told them exactly what was happening and where he lived.
"I could have died that day had it not been for Tyrone recognizing that I needed help and calling paramedics," said Mary. "He's my angel and I'm so proud of him."
The Good Samaritan Award is presented by the BCAS to people who provide unselfish and humanitarian assistance during a medical emergency.
The award was presented during an assembly at Tyrone's school, by Northern Executive Director Mike Michalko and attending paramedic Terry Cain. Tyrone's grandmother and family were also in attendance.
