Awards Presented to Ice Rink Life Savers

BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) presented two deserving bystanders with Vital Link Awards; in recognition of their quick thinking actions that helped saved the life of a Nanaimo, BC resident.

On December 21, 2009, local Paul Walters went into cardiac arrest while playing hockey at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The subsequent actions taken by off duty BCAS paramedic Dave Sheepwash and bystanders Jeff Braun and Pat O'Dwyer, ultimately lead to a positive outcome for Paul.

In celebration of Jeff and Pat's contribution, BCAS presented the pair with Vital Link Medals, which honour bystanders involved in successful CPR efforts. Bob Gallaher, BCAS Director of Operations for the Vancouver Island Region, also presented Dave with a letter of commendation in recognition of professionalism he demonstrated on the scene.

In attendance at the event were a number of Nanaimo City Councillors as well as family and friends of the honourees.
