Paramedics in Fraser Lake are conducting a raffle to raise money for Camp Kakhamela, a summer camp located near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast for children with Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 (insulin dependent or juvenile) diabetes most commonly occurs from infancy to the late 30s. In this type of diabetes the pancreas produces very little or no insulin at all. Seven-year-old Nolan Nicol of Fraser Lake is one of 200,000 Canadians living with the extremely debilitating symptoms, which requires around-the-clock monitoring to keep his blood sugar levels on a safe and even keel.
To support Nolan and others sufferning form this disease, paramedics are holding a raffle, the winner of which will receive an 18 by 28 inch framed and matted painting with accompanying poem titled "Paramedic" produced by accomplished Northern BC artist LeEtta Lafontaine and well known poet Jim McGregor of Langley. The original piece depicts an everyday scene of a young mother and child being assisted by the responding paramedics and the words of the poem carry a message of comfort and care that ride with ambulance crews on each call.
The raffle will be held on November 15th. Tickets are available for 3 for $5 and prints of the original, ready for framing, are for sale for $48. Both raffle tickets and prints can be purchased by contacting 250-699-6601 or 250-699-1234, by email at flambulance@bcgroup.net, or by mail at Box 596, Fraser Lake, BC, V0J1S0.
