A Million Dollar Run

July 29, 2008

Update from Will Rogers

A little worse for wear, but just mere miles from the finish, Will Rogers is continuing on his million dollar run in support of the Servants Anonymous Society of Surrey (SAS), despite injured IT bands. Rogers' began his 350 mile run in Victoria on July 29, to raise funds and awareness about the sexual exploitation of women and children and what SAS of Surrey is doing to help these women and children rebuild their lives. "I have blisters where I didn't know I could get blisters, rashes where I didn't know I could get rashes, and muscle twinges where I didn't know I had muscles," said Will, "but the leg is feeling better every day and I'm doing GREAT!" He added that he hopes to see as many of his supporters in Penticton as possible. Will's epic run will finish in Penticton on August 15 in Gyro Park between 2 and 3 pm.

million dollar run

On July 29, 2008, BCAS paramedic Will Rogers will start "A Million Dollar Run." Will is planning a charity run from 0 mile in Beacon Hill Park in Victoria and is planning to finish in Penticton on the afternoon of the 15th of August 18 days later.

Will, an experienced Ironman tri-athlete and marathon runner, hopes to raise one million dollars in support of the Servants Anonymous Society of Surrey (SAS); an organization, which provides safe and secure homes, education, long term support, hope and wholeness for girls and women who are homeless and at risk of sexual exploitation. In particular, SAS helps sex trade workers exit the sex trade, by providing long term homes, addiction recovery, education, and life skills.

The money raised between corporate and personal donations will go towards adding two more permanent safe houses and long term unrestricte access to education. All funds beyound the Million dollars raised will then go to setting up a similar, if not identical, operation in another BC community. It costs $50 a night to provide a bed for each girl or woman in the program and $95 a month for each participant to complete her grade twelve and go on to job training.

Will plans to run 20 miles a day; 10 miles in the morning and two 5-mile runs in the afternoon. This may be adjusted because he will put as many miles behind him while on relatively flat terrain in the beginning of the run. Mr Rogers will follow Hwy. 10 across through Delta, Surrey on to Fraser Hwy, through Langley and Abbotsford, Chilliwack up to Hope, over the Hope Princeton, through Keremeos to Osoyoos and then north to Penticton.

Will is supported by his 14-year-old son who is planning to cycle with him.

You can support Will in the following ways:

  1. Pledge or donate a minimum of $25 for a tax receipt here. Will plans on asking other EMS from across BC to match what BCAS raises.
  2. Provide accommodation for Will and his son in Victoria on the 28th and 29th.
  3. Provide accommodation along the way.

Will plans to visit as many of the BCAS stations as possible and will participate in media interviews and promotion along the way.
