The 9th annual Sunrise Summer Kick-off and Hastings Sunrise Safety Fair was once again a big hit with the 600 plus kids and families who attended this year. Organized by the Vancouver Police Community Policing Centre and the local Hastings-Sunrise Business Improvement Association, the event is a chance for local at-risk kids to interact in a positive way with emergency services personnel. Centred on a fun street hockey tournament, everything is sponsored and free for the kids, who take home prizes and their team shirt after participating.
BC Ambulance Service has had an extremely popular booth at this event every year, which includes a variety of hands on activities for the kids to try, as well as "Mini-ambulance Mayhem" races. Everyone has fun, and the kids pick up some great safety tips throughout the day. Paramedics also often act as referees and coaches for the hockey sessions, as the kids like to have their very own paramedic in their corner.
