Treatment Guidelines

BC Ambulance Service Treatment Guidelines

The British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS) is operated by the Emergency and Health Services Commission which holds exclusive power and authority to provide services related to emergency health and ambulance services in British Columbia, excluding those governed by Work Safe BC in the context of occupational first aid.

The treatment guidelines are the medical policies of the BCAS, but are also EHSC documents that set the standard of care for non-BCAS providers. Medical policy developed by other agencies providing responder services in British Columbia is expected to be consistent with the principles of care and interventions identified in the treatment guidelines. Adoption of the treatment guideline format is not a requirement.

The treatment guidelines require both a strong commitment to ongoing development of critical thinking and decision making skills. The guidelines also require an environment that supports frequent medical oversight review supporting the sharing and transfer of knowledge between field staff and medical leadership.

This public version of the treatment guidelines does not contain the BCAS procedural guidelines related to specific devices used within the context of BCAS paramedic practice.
